Am I imagining it or does GSET have a few hints of Saint Stephen in it?

No question Ring - same progression in the solo.

Yeah the chord progression is the same, and jerry plays the lick loud and clear. One of my favorite song-splicing moments!

Definitely. Do you think he was trying to go into St Stephen, or just playing with the notes? I'm no good at reading those nuances ...

Caboose mentions that the St S theme recurs in GSETs in that period; see, that's something I didn't know! I tend to notice things and think, "Was so-and-so trying to push for a particular song, or did I just imagine that?" But then later I'll forget when or where I heard something, LOL. People who've listened more systematically probably have a way better sense of that stuff.

I'm almost certain he wasn't actually pushing to go into St. Stephen, he was just throwing in that little excerpt, like a celebrity cameo in a movie. Recalling days of the past, and whatnot. Since they never performed the song in this period I'm pretty sure nobody was interested in playing it (it probably wouldn't have been very good, since they hadn't practiced it in so long).

listen to the last little run-ups jerry makes in his final solo in sugar mag...possibly the best ever version? it easily rivals 8/27/72, my personal favorite performance.

the St. Stephen theme reappears throughout the GSETs of '72-'74 but this one has the most pronounced and by far the best...

here's one of my favorite "song-splices" in Alligator, if you've never heard it:

great pic btw Johnny, like you said, this show is a requirement for '72 fans!

Thanks for the link, Clem. Brightened up my morning. I wonder if William (Bruce) Tell has seen Dr Flashback's review of this show ?

Sorry to appear a bit thick, but which '72 show are you talking about? Sounds like a good one.
